What to Measure on a Developer Portal
Developer portals accumulate vanity metrics easily. Unique visitors look healthy while first successful API calls stay flat. The fix is not more dashboards — it is a shorter list of signals that map to real work: account activation, key creation, first authenticated request, and return visits to the docs that unblock that request.
Start with the decision you need: are partners integrating, or are they bouncing after signup? That decision nominates three to five metrics. Everything else can wait for a monthly ops review.
At Platfdev we treat portal analytics as a craft of join keys and definitions. Without a shared meaning of “activated developer,” every chart becomes a debate.
